Today’s health challenges are complex, spanning disciplines and borders. Based at one of the world’s finest medical schools and situated in the innovation capital of Silicon Valley, CIGH pairs rigorous academic medicine with Stanford’s expertise in biodesign and frugal technology, business, engineering, law, and environmental science to tackle old problems with new solutions—and the entrepreneurial speed to deploy those solutions effectively.
We convene faculty, students, and partners across disciplines and continents to solve problems no institution or country can solve alone. We translate Stanford’s innovative excellence into global impact: research, leaders, and solutions that make the world healthier.
Our work is grounded in longstanding relationships with 40+ in-country collaborators on multiple continents, ensuring we address the challenges communities identify as most critical. Our leadership has launched numerous bidirectional collaborations, including the Stanford Yale Global Scholars program and the Stanford African Scholars in Global Health fellowship. In Sub-Saharan Africa, we supported the rapid expansion of ENTRUST, a Stanford-developed platform transforming surgical training across the continent. In Bangladesh, we have driven life-saving efforts to reduce lead exposure and combat antimicrobial resistance.
The most lasting investment in global health is in the people who will lead it in the future. Through world-class education, mentorship, distinctive fellowships, and catalytic funding, we cultivate the next generation of global health leaders. From launching the global, Gates-funded NGO WomenLift Health to hosting the NIH-funded Global Health Emerging Scholars and Stanford-LSHTM Planetary Health fellowships, we ensure that tomorrow’s leaders bring diverse perspectives and lived experiences to address the world’s most pressing challenges.
We believe innovation should serve humanity. To achieve this, we turn small, early investments into world-changing outcomes through our global health seed grants program. More than a third have sparked a new technology, innovation, or patent—along with numerous companies and NGOs. Others have spurred rapid responses in underserved U.S. communities and low- and middle-income countries, catalyzing life-saving innovations that continue to advance health today. We leverage our partnership with the Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign to ensure that Stanford health innovations reach those who can benefit the most – in ways that are locally relevant, sustainable, and scalable.
