The perioperative period, which spans from when a patient enters the hospital for a procedure until discharge, poses life-threatening health risks for billions of people living in under-resourced areas due to a lack of safe surgical and anesthetic care. Principal Investigator Cynthia Khoo, MD, PhD, and her colleagues will develop an international training and mentorship program with partner sites in Guyana, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Vietnam that applies the necessary local context to anesthesiology practices. During the pilot phase, a cohort of trainees from these partner sites will be paired with research mentors to receive research methodology training, access various technological tools to further their research success, and expand their academic networks. The project aims to build an international network of trained researchers, contributing to a more comprehensive and equitable understanding of perioperative health and disease.
“The program will improve health equity by enhancing understanding of perioperative disease in resource-limited settings and increase diversity of the researchers and patient populations represented in publications,” said Dr. Khoo.
