Position Description:

The Center for Innovation in Global Health seeks a teaching assistant for the winter quarter course, “Global Health: Scaling Technology Innovations in Low-Resource Settings.” The Teaching Assistant will work to support the course manager, Olivia Paige, with various tasks outlined below. In addition, the TA will work with the course instructors, Dr. Anurag Mairal and Dr. Michele Barry. Applicants must be current students at Stanford University (position open to graduate and undergraduate students).

The Teaching Assistant’s responsibilities include:

  • Weekly tasks include tracking student attendance, updating and maintaining course website on Canvas, grading assignments, and attending all course lectures (1:30 PM-4:30 PM PST on Thursdays).
  • The TA will assist Dr. Mairal in sourcing and preparing teaching materials, preparing lecture slides, and occasionally presenting slides on behalf of course instructors and guest lecturers.
  • The TA will maintain weekly office hours with students to be scheduled on an as-needed basis. During office hours, students will primarily be seeking guidance on the group project. Therefore, the TA should have a thorough understanding of the project expectations and deliverable. This knowledge about the project will be gained through a pre-course meeting with the course manager.
  • The TA will also attend weekly meetings with course instructors and the course manager and to go over upcoming content.
  • The TA will work with the course manager to produce a mid-course evaluation and a final evaluation, which will be presented to the teaching team.
  • Course logistics and communications will be managed by Olivia Paige. In the event of her absence, the TA will be responsible to step into this role.
  • There is the opportunity for in-depth evaluation of the course content and curriculum, should the TA have this skillset or a desire to develop skills in this area. If interested, the TA may work with Dr. Mairal on curriculum development for the following year’s course.

Opportunities and Benefits:

This position is an excellent professional opportunity, as the TA will work directly with the Senior Associate Dean for Global Health (Dr. Michele Barry) and Director of Global Outreach Programs at Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign. There is the opportunity for the TA to conduct an in-depth evaluation of the course content and curriculum, should the TA have this skillset or a desire to develop skills in this area. If interested, the TA may work with Dr. Barry and Dr. Mairal on curriculum development for the following year’s course.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to commit to 10 hours per week.
  • Complete tasks successfully and on time.
  • Experience using PowerPoint, creating new presentations with compelling images, graphs, and data.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Interest in global health and health equity.
  • Open to any Stanford Student (including undergrads, MD students and other grad students).

Position Supervisor: Olivia Paige, Program Manager, Center for Innovation in Global Health 

Hours: The TA will be hired at 25% time working a total of 10 hours per week. Official start date will be January 3, 2022. TA may be hired for 5 hours per week beginning in November 2021 for prep work.

Compensation: Hourly – will be commiserate with experience and will follow Student Wage Scales set by the University.
